You may feel worse before you begin to feel better. Remember that the road to better health may begin with a "healing crisis." As you move toward better health with natural healing programs and better nutrition, healing begins to occur. Detoxification comes in many forms and refers to many different programs that cleanse the body of toxins. Today, our environment is full of toxins and the foods we eat have become toxic. Even the air we breath and the water we drink is full of chemicals foreign to our bodies/systems. As part of the healing process the body will begin to discard toxic residues which have built up in our bodies over the years.

Although basic detoxification begins with diet, different detox programs may include nutritional fortification for the lungs, liver, bowels, blood and kidneys. During the initial phase of healing, your body begins to clean house and your vital energy begins to repair and rebuild internal organs. You may experience headaches, flu like symptoms, aching in joints and muscles and a great deal of fatigue. Often the crisis will come after you are feeling your best and appear to have more energy. However, this is setting the stage for the elimination process. Your "whole" body will get into the action and it could take several days to a week before you begin to feel relief as your body dumps these toxins.

It is important that you rest during this time. These symptoms will pass as your body goes through the cleanse. You may feel worse before you feel better. A good example is, if you used to get skin rashes, the rashes may reappear or get worse for a period of time as your body eliminates toxins through the skin. You may feel more nervous and you may also experience an initial increase in urination and even urinary tract discharges. It is important to remember that you are not getting worse, as you are actually getting better. It is important not to suppress these temporary symptoms with drugs or the healing process may become interrupted. The reactions you experience may be "mild" or "severe." If your symptoms are severe don't panic, as
this is natural to feel bad.

However, it is important to journal these symptoms and report them to your practitioner. You can bring your journal with you and the staff will make a copy for your chart. Make sure you write the date and time on each notation.

During a healing crisis your whole body works together to eliminate waste products and set the stage for regeneration. You symptoms may be identical to the disease that you are trying to cure and the symptoms can be more intense than that of the chronic disease. IT IS TEMPORARY BUT NECESSARY.

These symptoms are short in duration and move from one part of the body to another, from inside out and from top to bottom. You might notice a lack of appetite and maybe even a slight fever. Some people experience rash or hives, excessive gas, runny nose, headaches, insomnia, increased thirst, weakness, lethargy, nausea, diarrhea, cramps, constipation, fever blisters, dry mouth, dizziness, canker sores, nervousness, drop in blood pressure, and a variety of joint/muscle pain and strange body aches. Maybe even an arthritic flair up. You may feel anxious, have mood swings and even strong emotions like anger, despair, sadness and fear. Some people have suppressed memories that arise during the healing crisis. If you can recognize these symptoms as the cleansing process, it is easier to accept them, as steps on the road to better health. They are really a small price to pay for better health.

Some of these reactions result from the stored toxins which begin to release faster than the liver, kidneys, skin and lungs can remove them from the body. They can also be caused by a deficiency of hydrochloric acid in the stomach and/or by dysfunctional or exhausted liver and adrenal glands.

It is important to continue to journal these things and important that you report them to your practitioner and/or his staff, so that the practioner can address each issue and suggest vitamins/herbals to support the cleansing of toxins. You do not want to suppress the cleansing, but your practitioner can help you get through it.

As you begin to change your way of eating and adding supplements and exercise to your daily living habits, you can expect more changes to take place in your body. These changes can often be confusing but you need to understand that these changes indicate positive improvement in your health.

As you have found in the reading of your blood tests, the quality of a nutritional program is also improved by omitting toxic substances such as coffee, black teas, tobacco, table salt, pepper, ALL soft drinks and cigarettes. Making nutritional changes is not an easy thing for most people to do, but take it one day at a time and stick with it. As you do things to improve your health, you gradually feel better and better. Keep in mind that a healing crisis is not a one time thing, as you may go through several before you reach your goal of optimum health.
